Instructions on how to apply for Commencement Awards

Grade 12 students are strongly encouraged to investigate potential scholarships, bursaries and graduate awards.  Whether it's through a parent's employer or through a parent's union as well as through the sites listed on the TVDSB Awards, Bursaries, and Scholarships Page, there are many awards to be given. 

GDHS has Internal and External Awards that students can self-nominate for.  Please see the awards list and criteria below as well as information on how to apply.

NEW!  The Public Property Assessment Network Scholarship: Western Region, 2021-22 School Year: The Public Property Assessment Network Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 to one recipient in the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association’s (OPSBA) Western Region, is being awarded for three school years – 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22. Scholarship recipients are students of strong character, leadership skills and potential, who care deeply about their communities and furthering their own learning. Click here for more information.

National Indigenous Scholarship Program 2022-2023 - Western University (scroll down in the link to view this award criteria) This scholarship is awarded annually to three incoming Indigenous undergraduate students (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) studying full-time at Western’s main campus in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, Engineering, Music, Health Sciences, FIMS, Social Science, Science based on their outstanding academic excellence and meaningful and impactful contribution toward Indigenous communities. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MARCH 14, 2022.

The Staples for Education in partnership with Kiwanis program is offering a one-year scholarship of $5,000 within each Staples District. Click here for the Application Form. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 4, 2022.

Larry McGrath International Silver Stick Scholarship - This application is intended for Canadian and American Students who are in their final year of high school and will be attending their first year of post-secondary education.  For the 2021-2022 Hockey Season we will be awarding three (3) American and three (3) Canadians awarded a Scholarship of $2000 each.  Applications are reviewed and recommendations are made by the Scholarship Committee each spring and then approved and announced at the International Silver Stick Annual Meeting in June each year.  APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 15, 2022.

Learn with Lerners Mentorship Program - Lerners believes diversity in the legal services industry is integral to providing effective legal representation.  That is why they are excited to continue their Learn with Lerners Bursary & Mentorship Program as part of our efforts to help address the systemic barriers experienced early on by Black, Indigenous and People of Colour in the legal services industry.  Click here for more information and on how to apply.

This program is offered to recent graduates of publically funded secondary schools in Ontario, who are interested in careers in the legal services industry and plan to attend college or university in the 2022-23 academic year. 

New in 2022, Lerners is proud to announce that, building off last year’s success, we are expanding this year’s program to select two recipients of a $5,000.00 CAD bursary and up to twelve months of mentorship with a Lerners lawyer.

OHF Scholarship - The Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) Scholarship was introduced in 1997 to recognize and reward dedication in education and hockey. The program provides financial assistance to registered OHF participants to offset the cost of post-secondary education. Since its inception, the OHF has distributed more than $450,000 to over 400 post-secondary students. Each year, the OHF awards scholarships to outstanding young people who display an incredible amount of commitment both at the arena and in the classroom. The bursary recipients are determined on the basis of academic achievements, hockey involvement and community involvement.  APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MAY 16, 2022.

Bruce B. Foster Memorial Award ($2000) Sponsored by the Chatham District Masons, this Bursary is open to any financially challenged student graduating from high school who will be attending college or university.  ***THE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS MAY 18, 2022.

***Any grade 12 graduating students who have financial need and plan to attend either college or university next year should apply for this Bursary.  You should contact Ms. Kading at: and email her a phone number where you can best be reached.  She will contact you and help with the completion of the application process.  All completed applications should be forwarded to Ms. Kading at the above email address as she will be collecting and mailing all applications to the Bruce B. Foster Committee.

OJEN Bursaries 2022 - Are you pursuing post-secondary studies leading to a career in the justice sector? If so, we have a great opportunity for you!  OJEN partners with the Association of Justices of the Peace of Ontario, the Association of Ontario Judges, and the Ontario Superior Court Judges’ Association to offer 22 bursaries across the province. Storwell Bursary for Foster Children - Storwell is offering an annual bursary of $2000 in support of foster children to help them attend post-secondary schools and to offer a hand up as they make their way forward in life.  Click here to apply.  APPLICATION DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 1, 2022.

Town and Country Mutual Insurance Scholarship - HT&C is pleased to announce the 2022 scholarship award.

This award is offered annually to graduating students whose parents or legal guardians are policyholders with HT&C Mutual Insurance Company. The scholarships are to assist post-secondary studies at a university or community college.  Up to eight $500 awards will be made available with the stipulation that only one award will be given per school. The student must be a graduating student who has demonstrated a significant commitment to school and community service. Apply here.

Bursaries for Grade 12 Students Pursuing Studies Toward a Career in Law - Bursaries are available to grade 12 students in Ontario, pursuing post-secondary studies related to the many careers in the justice system at an Ontario University or College.  These bursaries have been created to assist students who demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to their studies and who are in financial need. APPLICATION DEADLINE TO BE ANNOUNCED.

Brook Telecom Co-operative Scholarship - Brooke Telecom Scholarship 2021: Students whose parents have a Brooke Telecom Co-operative Ltd. service such as a cell phone, home phone, television, or internet service. There will be up to four scholarships of $1,000 each offered to students entering post secondary education.  Click here for Application FormAPPLICATION DEADLINE TO BE ANNOUNCED.
