Instructions on how to apply for Commencement Awards
Grade 12 students are strongly encouraged to investigate potential scholarships, bursaries and graduate awards. Whether it's through a parent's employer or through a parent's union as well as through the sites listed on the TVDSB Awards, Bursaries, and Scholarships Page, there are many awards to be given.
GDHS has Internal and External Awards that students can self-nominate for. Please see the awards list and criteria below as well as information on how to apply.

GDHS External Awards - Thames Valley Education Foundation
NEW, ADDED OR EXTRA AWARD OPPORTUNITIES (PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO DEADLINES)
- Parents/Caregivers should look into available scholarship/bursary/award opportunities offered by their employer or their union. Many unions and large corporations offer them to the children of their members.
- Libro Student Awards ($2000) Libro’s student award program supports youth who demonstrate outstanding commitment to their community while balancing academic success. THE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS APRIL 21, 2024.
- Larry McGrath International Silver Stick Scholarship - This application is intended for Canadian and American Students who are in their final year of high school and will be attending their first year of post-secondary education. For the 2022-2023 Hockey Season we will be awarding three (3) American and three (3) Canadians awarded a Scholarship of $2000 each. Applications are reviewed and recommendations are made by the Scholarship Committee each spring and then approved and announced at the International Silver Stick Annual Meeting in June each year. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 15, 2024.
- CUPE 4222 Graduation Award - CUPE 4222 members’ children are eligible to apply for CUPE 4222 Graduation Award. Please click here to see the application for the CUPE 4222 Graduation Awards for the 2022-2023 School Year. As part of your application you must: submit a presentation, in one of the following formats: an essay; a poster; or an audio-visual clip, on “The Importance of Unions in Society” and attach a Graduation Summary. All applications, presentations and Graduation Summaries are DUE BY APRIL 30, 2024, NO EXCEPTIONS.
- OHA and Dairy Farmers of Ontario Bursary Program - Ontario Hockey Association members know first-hand the commitment needed to succeed at a high level on the ice and in the classroom. With this school year providing extra challenges, the hard work put forth by graduating students are being recognized. The OHA is proud to partner with Dairy Farmers of Ontario to present the Bursary Program, which recognizes OHA members for their outstanding commitment to Community service, Academics, and Athletics. Eight Bursaries will be awarded at $6,000 each. The bursaries are open to all OHA members (OJHL, GOJHL, PJHL, and ACH) players, coaches, trainers and officials. A recipient is attending a post-secondary institution during the 2023-2024 school year, maintaining a high standard of academic excellence, is active in their local community programs (any community sport or social program), and must be applying to a post-secondary institution in Ontario.

Candidates must complete the application form and SUBMIT TO THE OHA IS MAY 6, 2024. Each application will be reviewed by a panel and only the successful recipients will be contacted by the OHA.
- DFC Here for Tomorrow Scholarship - Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C) and Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) believe the future of agriculture and food is bright - because you will be part of it. We want this scholarship to invigorate and equip you, the next generation of leaders and change-makers, with the understanding and belief that you have the power to make informed, sustainable food choices and career decisions.
This scholarship is not about grades or transcripts – it’s about discovering what sustainability means to you and your future. By applying for the DFC Here for Tomorrow Scholarship, you can contribute to a more sustainable tomorrow! 5 Scholarships for $3000 each are available to be won. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MAY 1, 2024.
- Bruce B. Foster Memorial Award ($2000) Sponsored by the Chatham District Masons, this Bursary is open to any financially challenged student graduating from high school who will be attending college or university. ***Any grade 12 graduating students who have financial need and plan to attend either college or university next year should apply for this Bursary. You should contact Mr. Taylor at: christopher.taylor@tvdsb.ca and email him a phone number where you can best be reached. He will contact you and help with the completion of the application process. All completed applications should be forwarded to Mr. Taylor at the above email address as he will be collecting and mailing all applications to the Bruce B. Foster Committee. Please apply with Mr. Taylor ASAP.
- The Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command Charitable Foundation & Royal Canadian Legion Ladies' Auxiliary Ontario Command Bursary ($1000) IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY ATTENDING HIGH SCHOOL, YOU CANNOT APPLY UNTIL YOU ARE PHYSICALLY ON CAMPUS IN THE FALL.
