GDHS Sports, Clubs, and Activities
The following is a list of the various sports, clubs, and other activities in which students may participate. There is a wide range of activities available. If you don’t see a club listed that you may be interested in, please speak to our Principal about your idea. If there is enough student interest we will discuss launching a new one. High school is what you make it! Have fun and meet new friends! Get involved! Please note***VARSITY teams consist of students in grades nine through twelve.
Anime Club
This club is for anyone interested in Anime in any form. Come talk comics, heroes, or movies.
Archery (Varsity)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. This sport starts in the spring and runs into June.
Badminton (Jr. and Sr.)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. This sport starts at the beginning of March and runs to the end of April.
Band/Small Ensemble
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve who are interested in playing a musical instrument. Our music program includes a shared concert band with West Elgin Secondary School as well as a small ensemble.
Baseball (Varsity Boys)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. This would be a new sport to GDHS but we would love to field a team. If you are interested please speak to Mr. Lee.
Basketball (Varsity Boys)
This team is open to boys in grades nine through twelve. The season runs from November to February. Come on out and represent!
Basketball (Varsity Girls)
This team is open to girls in grades nine through twelve. Basketball begins the first week in September. The girls traditionally practice a couple times a week with a couple tournaments on the weekends.
Best Buddies
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. Students join together once a week at lunchtime for some fun games and activities with our DE students. Best Buddies also help supervise at the Special Olympics and the year end DE field trip.
Breakfast Club
Our Breakfast Club offers all students healthy breakfast food to begin their day. There is no cost to students and everyone is welcome.
Cheerleading (Varsity)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. The GDHS cheerleading team is a competitive team that participates in regional competitions. We practice twice a week from September until June – it’s a big commitment but well worth it and so much fun!
Chess Club
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve who are interested in playing chess. Sign up in Guidance if you are interested.
Cross Country (Varsity)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. Cross country running is great to participate in. We strive for personal best times, an increased fitness level, and achieving personal goals. Whether you are a serious competitor or a recreational runner, this team has a place for you. Practices will begin in September.
Curling (Varsity)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. Curling is another sport possibly returning to GDHS if there is enough interest. There are two teams which consist of 5-6 boys and 5-6 girls. Tryouts usually begin in October or November and the season finishes in March. Curling is a great sport which gives you the chance to meet new friends. More information will be released as it becomes available.
Environmental Club
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve who are interested in saving the environment. More information will be released as it becomes available.
Fishing
At the end of May GDHS participates in the Edu-Cast Pro/AM Pleasant Valley Trout Farm Fishing Tournament. Only 40 students can participate so you must sign up early. More information will be released as it becomes available.

GAEL FORCE
Every year in September Glencoe District High Schools runs GAEL FORCE, two days of leadership activities designed to integrate students into school life. Grade 9 and Grade 10 students participate in teams, Grade 11 as team leaders and Grade 12 is the Committee who organizes the event. More information will be released as it becomes available.
GAELS Helping GAELS
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve who are interested in making GDHS an inclusive, warm and welcoming place. Sign up in Guidance if you are interested.
Golf (Varsity)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. We play in the spring. You must have your own clubs and players are responsible for their own green fees.
Hockey (Varsity Boys)
This team is open to all boys in grades nine through twelve. Tryouts start the first week of November. The league schedule runs from mid-November until mid-February and consists of 10 league games. Come out and be the next generation of champions.
Homework Club
This club meets every day after school in the Library. If you need help with homework, this is the place to be! There is no commitment, you just show up when you need assistance with your academics.
Photography/Yearbook Club
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. Meetings will start taking place at the end of September, after GAEL Force. Members can sign up as photographers or to dedicate themselves to a number of pages in the GDHS yearbook. Please listen to announcements for more information.
Prom
This committee is made up of Grade 12 students and is not affiliated with GDHS as the Prom now takes place off-site. Grade 12 students/parents coordinate and organize Prom externally.
Robotics
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve who are interested in robotics. More information will be released as it becomes available.
Soccer (Varsity Girls)
This team is open to all girls in grades nine through twelve. Girls soccer tryouts begin in the spring. Whether you play premiere, travel, or house league, the soccer team is looking for you.
Soccer (Varsity Boys)
This team is open to all girls in grades nine through twelve. the spring. Boys soccer tryouts begin in the spring. Whether you play premiere, travel, or house league, the soccer team is looking for you.
Soup & Chili Day
Once a year in February our entire staff provides a crock pot full of hot soup and/or chili, a bun and a drink for our GAELS during lunchtime! Come and enjoy a FREE lunch on us!
Student Athletic Association
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. This group of enthusiastic guys and girls is involved in raising spirit and funding for GDHS’s athletic teams. Students are responsible for organizing food booths, pep rallies, sport buy-outs, staff vs. student games, etc. If you like sports as a player or supporter, the SAA is a club for you! The first meeting will be in September.
Students’ Council
This club is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. This group of enthusiastic guys and girls is involved in raising spirit and funding for the entire student body. Spirit Days like “Suit Up”, “Jersey Day”, organizing and presenting the Talent Show, Christmas Assembly, Run for the Cure, etc.
Swimming (Varsity)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. As a GDHS swimmer, your season begins on November 1st and practice continues until OFSAA (early March). You will participate in at least three swim meets during the season, with the goal of reaching a Personal Best in TVRAA, WOSSAA or even OFSAA!
Tennis (Varsity)
We offer competitive girls and boys singles, doubles and mixed doubles teams. Our competitive season is in May and June.
Track & Field (Varsity)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. Track and field athletes begin training for the season right after March break. The season runs until early June with several qualifying meets along the way. OFSAA track and field is typically held the first weekend in June. There are midget, junior and senior age divisions in all events.
Ultimate Frisbee (Varsity)
This team is open to all students in grades nine through twelve. Ultimate Frisbee starts in the spring.
Volleyball (Boys)
The team is open to boys in grades 9 and 10. The season runs from September to November. Typically, we practice 4-5 nights a week and have one game each week. We also enter 3 weekend tournaments throughout the season.
Volleyball (Girls)
The team is open to girls in grades 9 and 10. The tryouts begin in November after girls basketball is finished. The season runs until the middle of March. We break for Christmas and during exams in January. Hope to see all of you in November for tryouts!
Year End Tailgate Party
On the last day of school GDHS provides a year end BBQ and Tailgate Party to all our GAELS during lunchtime! Enjoy music and socializing with friends and staff in the staff parking lot. Come and enjoy a FREE lunch on us! Following is the Grad vs Staff Softball game at the Simpson ball park. It’s a great way to end the year and to have some fun, leading into exams.
